The tradition
A Babalawo is a spiritual leader and diviner in the Yoruba religious tradition of Ifá, which originates from the Yoruba people of West Africa. The term means “Father of Mysteries” or “Father of Secrets”, reflecting their role as custodians of spiritual knowledge and wisdom.
Key responsibilities
Babalawos perform Ifá divination using sacred tools such as the Opele (divination chain) or Ikin (palm nuts), interpreting the messages of Òrúnmìlà — the deity of wisdom and destiny — to provide solutions to life's challenges, including health, relationships and career.
They possess extensive knowledge of herbal remedies and traditional medicine, preparing potions, amulets and other spiritual items to heal physical, emotional and spiritual ailments.
They conduct rituals to appease the deities (Òrìṣà) and the ancestors, ensuring balance and harmony, and play a key role in life's passages — naming, marriage, initiation and burial.
Beyond the sacred, a Babalawo advises on moral conduct and community matters, holding and transmitting the oral corpus of Ifá to the next generation.
